A Bombay High Court judgment on ‘nuisance’ dogs‘ is in appeal in the Supreme Court of India. The Animal Birth Control (Dog) Rules 2001 clearly defines the category of stray dogs that can be euthanized. However BBMP seems to have its own spin on it as the incident reported below on The Voice of Stray Dogs Facebook page clearly illustrates – there is a BBMP attempt to label some dogs as aggressive and put them down – an act that is completely illegal. On Saturday, 8th Sept 2012, Manasi & Jaysal

Then BBMP mandated that the Animal Welfare Organization (AWOs) clip both ears deeply so if the dog was ‘sleeping on one side’ it could still be clearly seen. Then they mandated that nylon chords/ tie be put around the neck

[Municipal Corporation of Delhi] and the B.B.M.P [Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike] in the face of AWBI’s advice on errant organizations namely ‘Circle of Animal Lovers’ (CAL) in Delhi & ‘Animal Welfare Society’ (AWS) in Bangalore. The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) & both municipal bodies in Delhi and Bangalore received several complaints over the past years against the treatment of stray dogs by the respective Animal Welfare Organizations (AWOs) from several volunteers and animal lovers – with irrefutable evidence. In both cases AWBI
Read More I’m a stray dog in Bangalore and I’ve had learn to live with “The Lesser of Two Evils” 25 million stray dogs were reportedly killed in Bangalore from 1934 – 1999 by the municipal corporation of Bangalore as a measure of stray dog population control. It is a moot point that that did nothing for actually controlling the population. One does however meet old Bangaloreans who talk of the ‘good old times’ when one only had to complain and the dogs in the street would be ‘taken away’. One also
Read More Part II – BBMP and SDFB have always colluded. In 2007 Bangalore Municipal Corporation started an illegal Dog Cull. On a live CNN-IBN interview in early 2007 a shameless BBMP and Stray Dog Free Bangalore (SDFB) sing the same tune. The BBMP’s white lie of putting together any sort of effective ABC program was apparent in 2007. 4 years they moved the Supreme Court that ABC does not work at all. In the interview the then BBMP Dy Commissioner says they have not killed dogs – other than on ‘complaints’.
Read More BBMP (Municipal Corporation of Greater Bangalore) has impleaded itself in the Supreme Court litigation against the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and in support of the the respondent People for Elimination of Stray Troubles (PEST) in the Special Leave Petition (Civil) No 691/ 2009 to ask for CULLING OF STRAY DOGS – something that they successfully and illegally resorted to in 2007. Read More The proximity of BBMP (earlier called BMP and BMC before that) and that of the anti-stray-dog lobby lead by “Stray Dog Free Bangalore” (SDFB) is baffling. This footage is from 3 March 2001 when Start/ NDTV covered the birth of SDFB – which was inaugurated by the then Mayor of Bangalore! And get this – the brain behind SDFB Diana Bharucha (on camera) clearly states that the solution is ‘elimination of stray dogs’ and nothing else – something that they now say they never said. The BMP Mayor who inaugurated

To our great surprise AWS facility remained operational and BBMP was quick to point out that this was actually not AWS but Dr Srinivasalu who was awarded Package 10. No-one in Bangalore, those working in animal welfare included, ever knew that. This is the context of a 2

When I started working ‘with’ dogs a few years back – it was only love for ‘my’ dogs. Then I realized that my dogs, or the dogs around me are not the only dogs that need help – so I started working ‘for’ dogs. Since the issue that melded this was a now discredited attempt by Bangalore civic, administrative and police authorities to hold stray dogs responsible for the death of
