Of the 230+ articles published  by this publication this is the 1st being written and published in 1st person. At it is in response to a motivated attack by a person, possibly persons, alleging that I and VoSD have either killed or displaced dogs we rescued – without a shred of evidence or the capacity to assimilate the information and evidence to the contrary. And actually engaged senior ‘professionals’ in ‘animal welfare’ to approach VoSD on the basis of this allegations – with them not once approaching us for an explanation either. –Read More
Given the ‘information’ flying thick and fast about BBMP’s stand on aggressive dogs it is timely to see this communique from the Chairman of the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) to BBMP and all NGOs working to support the ABC program in Bangalore. It has been previously reported that BBMP has attempted to make a case of putting down a supposedly ‘aggressive’ dog abandoned at one of its NGO’s facilities.  The Times of India has alleged in a newspaper report on 19 Oct 2012 that  the affidavit submitted byRead More
As with the other writing on ‘The Voice of Stray Dogs’, unless otherwise specified the writing expresses the opinion of  The Voice of Stray Dogs, and not necessarily that of individual VoSD Board members since individual comment/ contribution and consent is neither sought nor received. Here we examine whether this could it be Tamilnadu politics or just the sheer incompetence of the AWBI management, or both, that in case after case AWBI either fails to represent the animals adequalty or in case such as Kashmir and Punjab, fails to representsRead More
This is a series of posts on Kashmir. As with the other writing on ‘The Voice of Stray Dogs’, unless otherwise specified the writing expresses the opinion of  The Voice of Stray Dogs, and not necessarily that of VoSD Board members since individual comment/ contribution and consent is neither sought nor received. We have covered the litigation asking for other than ABC (spay-neuter) as a solution by ‘human activists’ in Kashmir [search on Kashmir in the search box above]. In this PIL No 361/2011 by A R Hanjura, Syed MusaibRead More
Over the last few months we have carried a series of articles on AWBI’s action in Kashmir that left out any Animal Welfare Organization (AWO) and went ahead with a tripartite MOU with SKUAST and SMC. Even the existing Kashmir SPCA was kept out of the picture. Now it turns out that AWBI action in Kashmir is not isolated but seems like a well thought out approach of leaving out AWO’s from ABC implementation in India. This goes against the grain of the ABC (Dog Rules, 2001). This is strangeRead More
This is a series of posts on Kashmir. As with the other writing on ‘The Voice of Stray Dogs’, unless otherwise specified the writing expresses the opinion of  The Voice of Stray Dogs, and not necessarily that of VoSD Board members since individual comment/ contribution and consent is neither sought nor received. These pictures are from yesterday from downtown Srinagar where a dog investigates its poisoned brother, and walks away. The name of the photographer is being withheld on request. Even as AWBI kept tom-toming about the ABC MOU withRead More
(This article examines the sequence of events of the last month as unfolding in Kashmir, with publicly available information) Kashmir, is a know ‘dog killing’ state with poisoning being the ‘favored method. The Animal Birth Control (ABC/ Spay-neuter)  program has been mired in controversy from the beginning and the complicated situation has been reported on these pages, including a request by the Govt to fund the ABC program to make dog pounds at a cost of INR 950 crores (US$ 200 Million)! But more than that the real contention lies atRead More
Rescue, text and pictures – Naina Athale a Navi Mumbai based activist. Naina is a PhD scholar and is a member of the Managing Committee of In Defense of Animals (IDA), co-opted member of the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and member of the Advisory Board of The Voice of Stray Dogs. December 2006 , Navi Mumbai. I received a call from a horrified bank employee who could not describe what she had seen. She said she was in a daze all the way home from her office atRead More
This is a series of posts on Kashmir where getting a head-start into writing has been a nightmare since it seems a highly personalized polarized situation. So we’d refrained comment without any clear evidence in our hands. However now we’re in possession of a bunch of official documents – which we’re digitizing and putting out and asking the relevant questions that arise from them. As with the other writing on ‘The Voice of Stray Dogs’, unless otherwise specified, the article is authored by Rakesh Shukla and expresses the opinion ofRead More
The State of J&K is the only one in the country which has not adopted the Indian Veterinary Act 1984. The result is extremely poor veterinary education standards and lack of genuine regulations governing Veterinary practices besides deprivation of VCI recognition to SKUAST Veterinarians. In other words for any misconduct and deviation, experimentation on animals, or failed surgeries or cruelty, AWBI cannot enforce and SKUAST is not liable to any action under VCI Rules (the touchstone of ABC Rules 2001). So why is this important? Because SKUAST is the agencyRead More
