If you know about stray dogs you know there is barely a place worse in India than Kerala is. If you’re doing any animal welfare and don’t know Avis Lyons – you’ve been doing something else! She has run, single-handedly and against all odds, Animal Rescue Kerala (ARK).
Avis came to India to stay and to help dogs. And she’s walked the talk for 12 years. She’s the energy and passion that puts someone less than half her age to shame. She’s created a fantastic purpose built facility for dogs she’s rescued. She’s run her own ABC program with no help from the Corporation. She’s fought and won court cases for the dogs. The corporations in Kerala and the Govt of Kerala just does not care. A whole lot of the information that is found on this website made and maintained by VoSD – that targets Kerala’s treatment of dogs – comes from Avis directly or through her contacts.
Her health has not all been there and she’s battled cancer for quite some time. A few months back she decided to ‘close’ ARK and go back to England.
Wordly Wags is an agency based Delhi and are running a project called “Friends of ARK”, which is trying to minimize the impact of Avis’ leaving, by
- Maintain the existing animals by finding new homes for as many animals in ARK’s care as possible. This will be coupled with hiring a manager to maintain the (lessor number) of animals left behind. This will set the limit of what ARK can keep doing. This is an appeal to everyone to ADOPT ARK’s and Avis Lyons’ dogs. See the animals that are up for adoption with the individual details here. Please contact Worldy Wags on the contact info on the page.
- Wordly Wags is working to license ARK’s facility will be licensed to an organization with a history in animal welfare, a plan and capability to do do ABC program. If you are interested please see the details at “Friends or ARK” project page
A few months back on receiving the announcement that she will leave we’d written at the time that she was a ‘legend’. And that she has been. And more. She has given much to India through her dogs when they had no help. We can pull a little of our weight!
